Trading With Multiple Timeframes: Top-Down Analysis Explained

Quick answer

Multiple-timeframe analysis means reading the higher timeframe for direction, a middle timeframe for structure, and a lower timeframe for entries. Most indicator "failures" come from reading the right tool on the wrong timeframe, or from timeframes that disagree.

Why timeframes matter

A downtrend on the 15-minute chart can be a normal pullback inside an uptrend on the daily. Neither chart is wrong; they answer different questions.

Top-down analysis

  1. Higher timeframe: the trend and key levels.
  2. Middle timeframe: the current swing: trend leg or pullback?
  3. Lower timeframe: the entry, once it agrees with the two above.

A factor of 4 to 6 between timeframes works well.

How to read multiple timeframes

1. Alignment

When all three timeframes point the same way, trades have the wind behind them.

2. Conflict

When the lower timeframe goes against the higher one, it is usually a pullback. Waiting for it to turn back in the higher trend's direction is the classic entry.

3. Same indicator, different timeframes

RSI above 50 on the daily but below 50 on the hourly means a pullback inside an uptrend, not a new downtrend.

Common mistakes

  • Too many timeframes. Three is enough.
  • Switching timeframes mid-trade to justify holding a losing position.
