Ichimoku Cloud Explained: Bias, Structure and Confirmation

Quick answer

The Ichimoku Cloud is a complete trend system on one chart. Price above the cloud is a bullish bias, below is bearish, and inside is no clear trend. The Tenkan and Kijun lines show short-term momentum, and the Chikou Span confirms whether price has truly moved past its recent history.

What Ichimoku shows

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, "one-glance equilibrium chart", combines trend, momentum and support and resistance. Its five lines are built from the midpoints of recent highs and lows rather than closing prices.

The five components

Settings

The default 9, 26, 52 suits most charts. Some traders in 24/7 markets such as crypto use 20, 60, 120 because those markets trade every day of the week, but the default remains the most widely watched, for stocks and crypto alike.

How to read Ichimoku

1. Bias from the cloud

Price above the cloud: bullish bias. Below: bearish. Inside: undecided, and most Ichimoku signals are weak there.

2. Cloud thickness

A thick cloud is strong support or resistance; a thin cloud is easier to break. The future cloud, shifted ahead, shows where those zones will be.

3. Tenkan and Kijun

Tenkan above Kijun shows short-term momentum up. Crosses above the cloud are stronger than crosses inside or below it. Price often pulls back to the Kijun in a healthy trend.

4. Chikou confirmation

When the Chikou Span is above price from 26 periods ago, the move has cleared its recent history and the bias is confirmed.

When Ichimoku fails

  • Low-volatility rotations. In tight ranges price drifts through the cloud and signals flip back and forth.
  • Taking crosses inside the cloud. They have no trend behind them.
  • Reading one line alone. Ichimoku works when the parts agree.

Ichimoku FAQ

What does it mean when price is in the cloud?

There is no clear trend. Ichimoku signals are weakest there, so many traders wait for price to leave the cloud.

What are the best Ichimoku settings?

The default 9, 26, 52 is the most widely watched. Some use 20, 60, 120 for 24/7 markets.

What is the Kijun-sen used for?

It is the medium-term balance line. In trends, price often pulls back to it, and a close through it can signal a shift.
