Volume in Trading Explained: Confirming Breakouts and Reversals
Quick answer
Volume shows how much traded in each period. It measures conviction: moves on rising volume have participation behind them, while moves on falling volume are suspect. Breakouts with strong volume are more likely to hold, and huge spikes often mark exhaustion.

What volume measures
Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so volume does not show who won. It shows how many people cared. Price tells you what happened; volume tells you how much conviction was behind it.
Reading volume bars
Most charts colour volume bars by the candle: green for up candles, red for down. Add a 20-period average of volume to judge whether today's volume is high or low for that market.
What to look for
| Price | Volume | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Rising | Rising | Healthy trend |
| Rising | Falling | Weakening rally |
| Breakout | Well above average | Breakout more likely to hold |
| Sharp move | Extreme spike | Possible exhaustion |
How to read volume
1. Confirm breakouts
A breakout from a range on volume well above average shows real participation. A breakout on light volume is more likely to fail and fall back.
2. Watch rallies on fading volume
Price grinding higher while volume shrinks shows fewer buyers are willing to pay up.
3. Spikes at extremes
A huge volume spike after a long move often marks capitulation or a blow-off: the last buyers or sellers rushing in.
Common mistakes
- Comparing volume between exchanges. Each venue reports its own volume.
- Ignoring the average. "High" volume only means something relative to normal.
What to pair volume with
- OBV and Chaikin Money Flow to turn volume into a trend line.
- Volume Profile for volume by price.
- Bollinger Bands to confirm squeeze breakouts.
