Momentum in Trading Explained: Speed, Not Direction
Quick answer
Momentum is the speed of price movement, not its direction. Strong momentum shows as large candles with shallow pullbacks; weak momentum shows as smaller candles and deeper pullbacks. Momentum indicators turn that speed into a number so you can see it slowing before price turns.

What momentum measures
Momentum asks how fast price is moving, not which way. A market can be rising with weak momentum (a slow grind) or falling with strong momentum (a sharp drop).
On a chart, strong momentum looks like large candle bodies, small wicks and pullbacks that are shallow and short. Weakening momentum shows smaller bodies, longer wicks and deeper pullbacks.
How momentum is calculated
The classic momentum indicator simply compares today's close with the close N candles ago (10 or 14 is common). Rate of Change does the same as a percentage, and RSI and MACD are smoothed versions of the same idea.
Settings
| Length | Use |
|---|---|
| 10 | Standard; balanced speed |
| 14 | Smoother; matches RSI's default window |
| 20 or more | Longer swings, fewer signals |
How to read momentum
1. Above or below zero
Above zero, price is higher than N candles ago; below zero, it is lower. Crossing zero shows the short-term direction flipping.
2. Slowing before turning
Momentum usually peaks before price does. When price keeps rising but the momentum line flattens or falls, the move is running out of speed.
3. Acceleration vs deceleration
A rising momentum line in an uptrend means the trend is accelerating. A falling line in an uptrend means it is still rising, just more slowly. That is a warning, not a reversal.
Common mistakes
- Confusing momentum with direction. Falling momentum in an uptrend does not mean price is falling.
- Fading strong momentum. Strong moves tend to continue before they stop.
- Using it in quiet ranges. With little movement, the line just wobbles around zero.
What to pair momentum with
- Moving averages for the trend direction.
- Volume to confirm a fast move has participation.
- ADX for trend strength alongside speed.

Momentum FAQ
Is momentum the same as trend?
No. Trend is direction; momentum is speed. A trend can continue while momentum slows.
Which momentum indicator is best?
RSI and MACD are the most widely used. The plain momentum and Rate of Change indicators show the raw idea most clearly.
What does momentum divergence mean?
Price makes a new high or low but momentum does not. The move is losing speed, which often comes before a pause or reversal.
