Rate of Change (ROC) Indicator Explained: Zero Line, Speed and Divergence
Quick answer
Rate of Change (ROC) shows how far price has moved, in percent, compared with N candles ago. Above zero means price is higher than it was; the size of the reading shows how fast it got there. It is best used as a speed gauge, not as an overbought or oversold signal.

What ROC measures
ROC compares the current close with the close a set number of candles ago and shows the difference as a percentage. It answers a simple question: how fast is price moving, and in which direction?
Because it is a percentage, ROC readings are comparable between markets, unlike MACD.
How ROC is calculated
Settings
| Length | Use |
|---|---|
| 9 to 12 | Short-term swings |
| 14 to 25 | Swing trading on 4 hour and daily charts |
| 200 or more | Long-term trend on the daily chart |
How to read ROC
1. The zero line
ROC above zero means price is higher than N candles ago, and below zero means lower. Crosses of zero show the short-term direction changing.
2. Expansion and contraction
ROC moving further from zero shows acceleration. ROC drifting back toward zero while price still trends shows the move slowing down.
3. Extremes are relative
ROC has no fixed upper or lower limit. Compare a reading with that market's own past extremes rather than with a fixed level.
Divergence
When price makes a higher high but ROC makes a lower high, the move is happening at a slower pace. It is a warning that momentum is fading, best acted on only when price structure confirms it.
Common mistakes
- Chasing spikes. A big ROC spike often marks the fastest part of a move, not the start.
- Using fixed overbought levels. ROC is unbounded, so 10% can be extreme in one market and normal in another.
What to pair ROC with
- Moving averages for direction.
- RSI for a bounded momentum view.
- Volume to confirm acceleration.
Rate of Change FAQ
What is a good ROC setting?
12 is a common default for short-term charts, and 14 to 25 suits swing trading. Longer settings show the bigger trend.
Is ROC the same as momentum?
Almost. The momentum indicator shows the raw price difference; ROC shows it as a percentage, which makes markets comparable.
Does ROC above zero mean buy?
It means price is higher than N candles ago. Use it with trend and structure rather than as a signal on its own.
